Graphic Design and Typography 01 DIY Project
In my graphic design courses I have learned about the importance of typography and its interaction with image.
In this project I chose a topic important to me and conducted research to find out what images and messages I wanted to communicate. Each aspect of the poster was deliberate from the placement of the hands to the flowers. From my research I came across a study that was done including on self-injury. I pulled their interview questions to base mine off of. I looked into color psychology as well and analyzed colors and images commonly found in posters from the CDC and National Institute for Mental Health. I focused immensely on the placement of the text trying to decide what layout allowed for an interesting combination of text and image.
Graphic Design and Typography 02 Scanner Project
In my Graphic Design 02 course I planned and completed a photoshop collage using items I scanned on a flatbed scanner. My project speaks on the interconnectedness of real and fake art in the world today. To represent this, I used a myriad of fake objects with their real counterparts. Some objects are more obvious to determine whether they are fake or not while others like the Japanese glass buoy on the bottom are difficult to identify their authenticity.
Through this project I learned how to utilize a scanner properly and photoshop techniques to create an intereactive composition.
Graphic Design and Typography 02 Figma Website Project
For one of my final projects, I had the opportunity to learn about Figma and the basics of website building. I was tasked with creating and interactive website using the programs available on Figma and on a subject that was meaningful and filled a need. My topic on Alaska and its history stems from a lack of knowledge about the state. While it is a popular travel site most who visit do not understand the cultural and historical significance of the places they visit. The intent of this project was to help inform the general public in an engaging way.
Through this project I learned about navigational skills that help users go from one page to another in a coherent way.
Student Design Lab Self-Initiated Creative Project
In my design lab class, I was able to create a large-scale project on any topic. I chose wayfinding design. I had noticed that there seemed to be a lack of wayfinding signage around campus, but especially in UMKC’s Fine Arts building which had no wayfinding at all. Through the course of this project, I learned about regulations and design practices that impact accessibility. I utilized the U.S. Access Board to help me understand what aspects of design I should include in my project. I also referenced studies conducted in Naning, China about the importance of branded wayfinding that helped direct the design choices made to stay adjacent to the department branding.
This project taught me about accessibility, wayfinding design, and branding.
Graphic Design and Typography 01 Zine Project
One of the first projects I worked on was creating a zine on any chosen topic. My zine pulled from my roots in Alaska exploring my native Alaskan heritage through the lens of garment design. Through the project I learned about the process of making a book, printing, and binding. Through this experience I was able to incorporate other practices in photoshop to edit my images, and hand lettering/drawing accents.
Photography
I had the opportunity to take photography where I learned how to use a camera and the history of photography while completing projects.
Through these projects I learned about portrait photography, landscape photography, and editing software and tools.
